Monetizing Regional Victorian Solar Curtailment with Variable-Frequency Mining
Across the Victorian Distribution Network Service Providers (Powercor, AusNet, and Jemena), thousands of agricultural and commercial solar installations are hit with strict export zero-limits. During peak solar generation between 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM, excess generation is automatically curtailed by solar inverters, leaving tens of kilowatt-hours of clean energy unharvested each day.
The Concept of Flexible Thermodynamic Hashpower
Crypto mining hardware is unique among industrial loads: it can be turned on, modulated, or shut down instantaneously with zero mechanical wear on tooling. Unlike pumps or refrigeration compressors with high inductive starting currents and cooldown cycles, modern ASIC switchmode power supplies can ramp up and down within seconds.
Our System Architecture
At Neuron Layer Hub's Dawson test yard, we demonstrate an automated solar tracking controller that communicates via Modbus TCP with Fronius and SMA solar inverters:
- 09:30 AM (Solar ramp-up): As solar production exceeds the farm's base refrigeration load by 3.5kW, the first ASIC miner boots in low-power 1,800W mode.
- 11:30 AM (Solar peak): With 15kW of curtailed solar available, four machines ramp to full standard frequency (3,200W each).
- 02:45 PM (Cloud cover dip): Inverter telemetry signals a sudden drop in irradiance; the controller instantly issues dynamic frequency throttling commands to drop each machine to 1,200W, preventing any grid energy import.
- 04:30 PM (Solar taper): Controlled shutdown scripts execute safely, flushing heat from the chassis before main power contactors open.
This approach transforms zero-value curtailed electrons into verifiable computational work, achieving a rapid payback on oversized solar arrays without expensive lithium-ion battery cycling.
